Weddings and Civil Partnerships

Rings

Perhaps...

You have a special place in mind, of significance to you and your partner which is not a registered wedding venue. This could be a beach, a field, a marquee, a woodland setting, your favourite football team's stadium or pitch, a theatre...... the possibilities are endless!

Perhaps...

You want your ceremony to be different, with a theme relevant to you!

The possibilities truly are endless.

When you decide to commit in a marriage or civil partnership you start to think about your special day. The traditional options are the religious ceremony or the Registrar's office or Registrar at a registered venue. However this may not suit you. There are restrictions for the Registrar at a registered venue, there cannot be any religious content and it must be conducted in the designated registered room.

An Independent Celebrant can conduct your ceremony anywhere and include what you like including any religious content, for example you and your partner may be of different faiths and want content from both faiths incorporated into the ceremony.

However it will be necessary to arrange the legal part of the marriage or civil ceremony. For the marriage to be recognised in law the "Declaratory Words" and the "Contracting Words" need to be said in a Registry Office or licensed venue for a marriage certificate to be issued.

Declaratory Words
"I do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful impediment why I [your name] may not be joined together in matrimony to [partner's name]"

Contracting Words
"I call upon these persons here present to witness that I [your name] do take thee [partner's name] to be my lawful wedded husband / wife" (This wording will vary slightly for couples forming a Civil Partnership)

These words are the only legal requirement for marriage, as well as formally identifying yourselves to the registrar and signing the marriage/civil partnership register in front of two independent witnesses and a registrar.

The rest of the service including the exchanging of rings and saying of vows to one another is purely ceremonial and can take place literally anywhere and at any time of day or night. You are limited only by your imagination.

Many couples are now choosing to attend their local Registrar's Office and have a simple marriage at a current cost of £43.50. They do this prior to the wedding celebration, often in the morning. You just need the legal document! The Celebrant doesn't need to see the marriage certificate.

Following this they then can use an independent celebrant to conduct a unique ceremony which is both meaningful and tailor made.

I can help you to design the ceremony of your dreams. We can include music, readings and poetry of your choice. We can work together to write your vows in order to ensure they are special and significant.

Perhaps...

You have a talented friend or family member who can sing or play a musical instrument?

Perhaps...

You have children and want them to be involved in the ceremony?

I will:

  • meet with you to discuss what you want, this can be a home visit, a meeting at the venue, whatever suits you
  • listen to what you tell me, get to know you and the story of your romance, relationship
  • ask you to fill in a questionnaire to gather relevant information for the ceremony
  • help you to write your vows, if you need my help
  • discuss what special rituals you might want to incorporate such as hand fasting, unity candles, exchanging of roses, unity sand, ceremony, etc.
  • design the ceremony and send you a draft to approve/amend then agree final version
  • choreograph the ceremony with you, ideally having a rehearsal so bridesmaids, ushers, people doing readings etc know where to be and when
  • conduct the ceremony professionally allowing you to relax and enjoy your special day designed just for you

The cost for the above is £400

You can have a guest book for you to sign your vows and ask all your guests to write a message to you and if you wish, a certificate of the day which you and the wedding party can sign. Again it is up to you.

You arrange and pay for your venue, flowers, catering, entertainment and similar to celebrate your ceremony.

I am based near Leeds in West Yorkshire but I am happy to travel throughout the North and Midlands especially the Lake District and North Lancashire where I have contacts.

If there is travelling of more than 40 miles or an overnight stay involved then we would need to discuss what extra costs might be.

Also if you wish me to purchase items you wish to keep after your ceremony such as candles or guest book then we can agree further costs.

So please contact me to discuss your tailor made ceremony for your special day.
